The painter has to move through this micro-labyrinth on a daily basis; it requires great manoeuvring skills. When creating an icon, artistic freedom is reduced to a minimum because one has to follow a predefined form. However, the secret of icon painting, in addition to the author\u2019s skills, also lies in the special relationship to the manufacturing process itself. The icon gets its spiritual aura first from the motif, which is most often a copy of a much more famous icon &#8211; usually combined with some religious story &#8211; and then from the author who creates it in deep devotion and as a kind of prayer. Holy paintings produced in that manner have an aura that copied, mass produced icons do not possess.
